Grading a sloped yard flat is expensive and disrupts the soil. Building a multi-level deck over the slope often costs less and creates more usable outdoor space than leveling the lot.
The frame needs correctly sized lumber, hardware rated for outdoor exposure, and footings anchored below the clay-active soil layer. These are invisible once the deck is finished - which is exactly why they matter so much.
